RGB, CMYK and colour expectations

Work through the job in four steps

  1. Understand the difference

    Screens emit light in RGB; most process print uses inks. Some bright screen colours cannot be reproduced exactly with standard CMYK.

  2. Use the right profile

    Ask which colour profile or PDF preset suits the process and paper. Avoid blind conversion through several applications.

  3. Consider the stock

    Coated and uncoated papers reflect light differently, so the same ink values can look different.

  4. Approve a proof

    For a critical brand colour, agree a colour-managed proof or physical sample and its viewing conditions.

Common mistake

A laptop display is not a colour reference unless calibrated and used in controlled conditions.
