Measure the output, not the screen

A drawing can look right and still be wrong

A plan resized to fit a sheet may retain sharp lines while losing its intended scale. That matters where people use measurements rather than treating the drawing as an illustration. State the required sheet size and scale together. Ask the project owner which version is authoritative and whether the output is for reference, consultation or measured work.

A3 measures 297 × 420 mm, A1 594 × 841 mm and A0 841 × 1189 mm. The PDF page size should match the required finished format unless the production team specifies otherwise. Check the title block, revision code, scale bar and units before the file is released.

Do not let “fit” make the decision

Desktop PDF printing options can scale content to the available printable area. Adobe explains the difference between actual-size and fitted output. For a scale-critical plan, communicate the requirement directly and verify a known dimension or scale bar on the finished sample. The label “1:100” printed in a title block is not proof of the physical scale.

A 1:100 drawing reduced to half its linear dimensions becomes 1:200. Halving the sheet area is different: an A1-to-A2 reduction is approximately 71% in each dimension, not 50%. Keep those relationships separate when preparing different-sized sets for meetings.

Thin lines, pale fills and dense legends

Ask for a test if fine linework or colour distinctions are critical. Colour-coded layers may lose meaning in monochrome. A solid dark hatch can bury a note. Review the plan at its intended size and under the lighting in which it will be read; screen zoom hides many practical problems.

Decide whether the files need flattening or specialist export settings with the drawing owner and printer. Avoid screenshots of a CAD view. Supply a suitable PDF retaining clean geometry and embedded text where possible. Do not add decorative crop marks if they interfere with the title block or the specified sheet boundary.

One project, several distribution needs

A consultation display, an office review set and a folded site copy have different handling requirements. Specify rolled, flat or folded delivery, the number of complete sets and how revisions should be separated. For teams around Warrington and Cheshire, box labels should identify the project reference and revision without making an old drawing look current.

The Bank Quay announcement describes proposals, not a completed scheme or a customer order. The print lesson is general: distinguish a public-facing visual from a controlled technical document. Give each a clear purpose, owner and approval route. Site teams should follow their own document-control process for superseded plans.

Keep the measurement authority explicit

Some drawings state that dimensions must be read rather than scaled. Others contain a scale for reference but are not the authorised source for construction decisions. The document owner should make that status clear. Printing at the right size does not change the authority or intended use of the underlying drawing.

Review revisions as a set. A new title block on one page can sit beside an old detail sheet if a folder is assembled from several exports. Use a drawing register listing the file, revision and required copies. Remove obsolete files from the production folder and ask for complete sets to be labelled in a way that the receiving team can recognise.

Folding also affects practical use. A folded plan may need the title block visible on the outside; a rolled plan may suit a display but be inconvenient in a folder. State the intended storage and handling so the production team can assess a suitable arrangement. Precision in the brief should cover the document's identity and physical use, not only its nominal dimensions.

Two questions before ordering

Does an A0 printer guarantee the correct scale?

No. File size, scaling settings and output checks determine scale. Specify it and verify a known dimension.

Can a monochrome copy replace a colour plan?

Only when colour carries no essential meaning or the document owner approves an alternative legend.
